To be bothered by something is to mind it or to be annoyed by it or disturbed by it. But bother consists in having an attitude. It sounds contradictory to say, ‘this smell is fouling my experience, though it’s not bothering me at all’. Surely if it is true that a sensation was ‘fouling your experience’, then it follows that the sensation was bothering you. ![]() Now consider this question: All the while, had the noise been, unbeknownst to you, bothering you? Surely the answer is ‘Yes’. You also realize this: that ‘all the while it had been, unbeknownst to you, fouling your experience as you went about your business’. Then the compressor stops, and you do notice the sudden, glorious silence. ![]()
